10 cool new products for summer (and GIVEAWAY!)

You know what’s up? Summer’s up, dat’s what! Our favorite time of the year is upon us, and that means beaches, lakes, barbecues, and just generally sitting around chilling with our friends or our phones. Okay, mostly our phones.

But anyway, we rounded up a few cool products to make you summer even more awesome. And we are going to give a few away to one lucky TWK follower! So let’s get to it. (post includes some affiliate links, thanks for your support!)

HyperChiller ($28.99)

Now THIS is a summer must-have! The Hyper Chiller was made specifically to take hot coffee and turn it cold enough to make iced coffee in about a minute or so without touching ice and getting diluted. That being said, it works to cool down ANY liquid super fast – from iced tea to water to soda (although you might lose a little carbonation in the process).

It has a multichamber stainless steel design which has a surface area equivalent to 30 ice cubes. All you have to do is leave it in your freezer for a few hours (12 hours recommended) and pour up to 12.5 ounces of liquid inside. After waiting a minute or so, pour it out! Depending on how hot the liquid is, you can use it to cool down more than one drink one after the other. Making two iced coffees from hot coffee works…you just have to leave it in a little longer after the first one.

Lush Lash Growth Serum ($69)

Thick, healthy eyelashes are definitely in, and Lush Lash by MeSkinLabs promises to help you achieve them with a physician-grade blend of 542 proteins, peptides and growth factors to nourish, fortify and restore hair follicles. According to the manufacturer, the key ingredients Redensyl®, Capixyl® and SymPeptide® “are clinically proven to increase the length and density of lashes, and botanicals add resilience and shine” in as little as 10 days (twice a day application to upper lash)

So, after several days of use…does it work? Definitely not as much as the promo pics which look like the girl applied fake lashes on the “after” pic, lol! But test subject reports that it did offer a bit of improvement due to a plumping, moisturizing effect.

LushLash is  made in the USA without parabens, sulfates or phthalates. In addition to eyelashes, you can also use the product on your eyebrows to thicken them as well!

BONUS: the product ships with a free container of MeSkin Age-Defying Moisturizer.

Want to try Lush Lash for yourself for free? Enter our giveaway at the bottom of this post and you could win a free bottle of the growth serum PLUS the moisturizer!

Kwilt Shoebox – Keep Your Personal iPhone/Android Photos and Videos Private ($59)

Summer means tons of Instagram shots. Are both your phone storage and iCloud account full? Are you paranoid about all your private stuff being stored on cloud servers, with who knows who at these big companies having access and doing who knows what with them? How would like to have 1 TB or more of space to back up all your pics and videos? The Kwilt Shoebox (strange name we must say) helps solve your storage woes by turning any USB hard drive into your own private cloud storage device. Your data is not stored by some big company but by you at home.

The product does not copy your private content to its own servers, but rather connects your own mobile devices from anywhere you are (using your data plan or public Wi-Fi) to your USB drive as long as the Kwilt Shoebox remains connected to your home’s Wi-Fi. All you have to do is set up the device once, download the Kwilt app to your Android or iPhone, pick what you want to be stored in your private cloud, and then delete the originals from your phone. You will still be able to see the photos from the Kwilt app after you delete them from your phone’s internal storage — similar to the Google Photos app.

Unlike Google Photos, you cannot delete photos from your storage directly from the app. You have to disconnect your USB drive from the Kwilt Shoebox and connect it to a computer in order to delete files. Maybe a future app update will allow this functionality. The cool thing is that if your private device (USB stick, for example) gets full, just get a larger or new one. NO monthly fees!

The Kwilt Shoebox comes with USB/USB Mini and HDMI/Mini HDMI adapters. The HDMI output is there so you can view your content on a big screen using a feature called KwiltCast — which is not yet available as of this writing.

One last benefit is that the device is pretty small…its just a bit longer than the included power adapter!

SABRE RED Pepper Gel ($11.99)

Protect yourself, your family and your friends during summer travel with SABRE RED Pepper Gel. The gel comes with a flip-top which prevents accidental discharge and a keyring. Carry the comfort-grip case when in a sketchy situation, and deploy the gel with a quick flip of the lid.

Because its a gel instead of a spray, there is less chance of the spray blowing back into your face…and it sticks to your attacker’s face better. Spay reaches 12 feet. Check local regulations — some places ban pepper spray.

Travel Tray ($15)

The Travel Tray is a simple invention ideal for long summer road trips. It fits right into your car’s existing cup holder and extends it, so you can put snacks, coins, or other small items in it instead of having these all over the place. It comes with a removable bottom cup in order to adapt the size to fit most cars. It also comes in wide variety of colors (11 of them).

Its a good idea…but it didn’t fit my car’s cup holder with the bottom cup — and removing it made it flop around uselessly. So, not for me, but perhaps its because my car is a 2001 SUV!

OMG! Accessories Hologram Cosmetic Cases ($24)

OMG! Accessories makes super cute bags, such as cosmetics bags, backpacks and even cases for your shades. OMG was founded by Anne Harper in 2009 out of her Chicago apartment with the goal of being ahead of the fashion curve while remaining within reach of today’s youth price-wise. Her design team’s products have found their way onto shelves of top retailers such as Nordtrom and Macy’s.

The Love So Much bag pictured above top features a glittery, shiny hologram cover, a lined vinyl construction, and OMG zipper pull. Great for carrying your necessities around this summer!

We are giving a cosmetic bag away courtesy of OMG! Accessories! (scroll down to the bottom for entry instructions)

The Water Pillow by Mediflow (starting at $49)

After playing hard at the beach or a park, you want a good night’s sleep. Enter the Water Pillow by Mediflow, a water-filled pillow which adjusts to your neck and head as you sleep for better comfort. John Hopkins University has stated water pillows improve sleep quality, so its not just the marketers behind the product who are touting its benefits. These pillows are also recommended by many chiropractors to help relieve neck and shoulder pain and to recover from surgery — so you know it is legit.

The pillow is very comfortable and stands up to normal use, although it is kind of heavy. The trick is to adjust the water level to your liking, because it gets firmer and heavier as you use more fluid. It comes with a spout to help fill it up.

If you are the type of person who likes to sleep with a pillow on their head…this cannot be your only pillow because you will probably suffocate! So get the Water Pillow for underneath and a normal pillow for your head/snuggling lol. Or if you are like me, one under head, one over head, one for snuggling, and one between your legs!

MOJO Aromatherapy/Color Therapy Slap Bracelet ($14.99)

Bring the MOJO aromatherapy/color therapy slap bracelet to your next summer festival and feel the Zen wash over you. Or at least look trendy and smell nice!

The slap bracelets come in several funky patterns, colors, and fragrances to suit your style and mood. Apply the supplied 100% natural essential oil to the super-absorbent microfiber bracelet and it will slowly release its aroma throughout the day.

The bracelet pictured above is the “RELAXED” model. According to the maker, “The color blue is associated with speech, communication, and self-expression. It invokes a feeling of peace and relaxation, can stimulate your imagination, enhance intuition, and is perfect for meditation sessions.”

The essential oil blend for RELAXED contains: Orange Sweet, Lemon Sicily, Tea Tree Australian, Rosemary Spanish, Frankincense (India), and Eucalyptus Globulus. “Characteristics: The citrus Orange Sweet and the Rosemary blended with hints of soft, woody Frankincense will soothe your senses and bring you a feeling of deep relaxation.”

Sounds (and smells) good to me!

AcneFree Maximum Strength Terminator 10 ($6.49)

Severe acne sufferers can get help by way of AcneFree’s newest product, Terminator 10 (show above with an earlier product, the Body Clearing Acne Spray). It has 10 percent Micro-Benzoyl Peroxide to reach deep to eliminate bacteria. According to AcneFree, “Micro-sized Benzoyl Peroxide minimizes the over-drying that can occur with ordinary benzoyl peroxide. Triple-action power of chamomile, ginger and sea whip soothes and reduces redness.”

We like the AcneFree line and recommend them in conjunction with care from a dermatologist.

Prep U for Boys Personal Care Products (start at $9.50)

Move beyond Axe with Prep U Personal Care Products for Boys. What sets this line of body sprays, foaming wash, active dry powder, deodorant, and more is the emphasis on all-natural products. The powder, for example, has no talc.

Prep U products can keep you smelling and feeling great even after a full day of activity without BPA, synthetic fragrances, or other artifical ingredients most personal care products are chock full of. We tried them and they smell nice. And here’s a secret– adults around here have been known to use the samples we received as much as the teens.

Artifacts of a ’90s Kid $16.99

Are you crazy about the 1990s? Maybe you were too young to remember those days (or weren’t even born yet), but trust us: the days when acts like Ashanti, Nelly, Ja Rule, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. ruled the airwaves and shows like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, X-Files and Friends were the highlights of TV were pretty dope.

You can relive some of the 1990s through Artifacts of a ’90s Kid by Alana Hitchell, a scrapbook/journal of sorts which takes you into the mind of a Millenial as she grows up during one of the best decades EVER.

“She reminds you what it was like to grow up during an era that consisted of playing countless hours of Nintendo, reading Lurlene McDaniel books, and wearing Esprit T-shirts and Yoyo jeans. With no real responsibilities to worry about, a typical day involved playing board games, eating junk food, and obsessing over the latest Lisa Frank stickers.”

Battlefield Earth MP3 Audiobook USB $35

Sci-fi legend L. Ron Hubbard’s New York Times best-selling sci-fi novel, Battlefield Earth MP3 audiobook is available on a 8 GB USB flash drive. Okay, the movie sucked big time, but the book itself is pretty great, and this audiobook does it justice with high production values and great acting from 67 voice actors performing 198 characters.

“In the year AD 3000, Earth is a barren wasteland, plundered of its natural resources by the millennium-long regime of taloned, gas-breathing, nine-foot alien conquerors from the planet Psychlo. Fewer than 35,000 humans survive in a handful of communities scattered across the face of a postapocalyptic Earth. From a desolate village in the Rocky Mountains near what once was Denver, Colorado, a courageous young man named Jonnie Goodboy Tyler embarks on a hero’s journey to challenge the fearful myths of his people. Enslaved by the sadistic Terl, the Psychlo security chief of Earth, Jonnie and a small band of survivors pit their quest for freedom against Terl’s ruthless ambition for personal wealth and power in a rebellion that erupts across the continents of Earth and the cosmic sprawl of the Psychlo empire, with the fate of the world, of mankind, and of the galaxies beyond in the balance.”

• 47½ hours of entertainment and adventure in high-definition sound.

• Cinematic-quality soundtrack with more than 150,000 sound effects.

• Convenient to listen to in your car, on your device or on your computer. Plays on any MP3 enabled player.

Devil in Ohio $17.99

Just because its Christmas, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a good spooky book. And Devil in Ohio by Daria Polatin fits the bill, with some great reviews on Amazon and elsewhere.

“When fifteen-year-old Jules Mathis comes home from school to find a strange girl sitting in her kitchen, her psychiatrist mother reveals that Mae is one of her patients at the hospital and will be staying with their family for a few days. But soon Mae is wearing Jules’s clothes, sleeping in her bedroom, edging her out of her position on the school paper, and flirting with Jules’s crush. And Mae has no intention of leaving.

Then things get weird.

Jules walks in on a half-dressed Mae, startled to see: a pentagram carved into Mae’s back. Jules pieces together clues and discovers that Mae is a survivor of the strange cult that’s embedded in a nearby town. And the cult will stop at nothing to get Mae back.”

So whether you get a flat tire when you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere, your car overheats, or a mysterious dashboard light suddenly starts blinking, help is just a reach-in-the-glove-box away.”

Yellowberry

Yellowberry founder Megan Grassell was appalled when she took her younger sister to the mall to buy her first bra. There simply wasn’t a simple, comfortable option which was marketed in an age-appropriate way. Padding, push-up and underwire bras pitched in an overly sexy manner was not what she had in mind.

So she took matters into her own hands and started her own company to revolutionize the bra industry for girls — all while still a junior in high school! Today, the brand not only sells bras, but also underwear, lounge and athletic-inspired apparel exclusively for girls. Also unique is the decision to photograph all models in bras from the back, to emphasize that the important feature is how the bra feels to each girl, rather than the observer.

Costs: items are moderately priced and the samples we were sent (see photos below) feel very high-quality.

ZeroWater Stainless Steel Water Filtration Pitcher

ZeroWater offers fresh and pure tasting water with the sleek and modern 8-Cup Stainless Steel Pitcher with free TDS Meter (Total Dissolved Solids).

Constructed of stainless steel and black plastic, this looks like Darth Vader’s personal water pitcher but there is nothing Dark-Sided about it. This BPA free pitcher comes with a laboratory-grade water testing meter that indicates precisely when it’s time to change the filter while demonstrating how ZeroWater leaves virtually zero dissolved solids in water. Its uses five sophisticated technologies that work together to remove virtually all dissolved solids from tap water, including chromium-3, chromium-6 and lead.

Pros: Water tastes phenomenal. Filters works very well. Water tester stores right in the lid and is very useful.

Cons: The pitcher is HEAVY when the filter is in place and filled with water. Filter and filling container take up a lot of the pitcher’s real estate, so you have to refill this quite often — and the filtration process takes a while.

Cost: $39.99. Replacement filters cost about $15 each, less if bought in bulk. Each filter is rated for 15 gallons, making it about 1 dollar per gallon proposition, depending on the initial water quality and how much you drink (we used our filter for much longer and the water still tasted great). Great for athletes and other health-conscious people!

Magic Opener

When we first received a sample of the Magic Opener to try we were like, really? Is this product really needed?

However, once we stuck it to our fridge using our built-in magnet (note, its not a very strong magnet and slides down our refrigerator sometimes) and started using it, we realized how much better it was to use it rather then our teeth, fingernails, knives, spoons or whatever else happened to be lying around the kitchen.

It opens soda cans and other cans with pull-tabs, as well as bottles (both plastic and the old school metal-capped ones) but does NOT open sealed cans which you normally need a can opener for (like soup cans).

Costs only about $20

How to Avoid Shopping Scams During the Holidays

Tips by the team at DealsPlus (www.dealsplus.com )

Finding out you have fallen victim to an online hoax can take the fun out of one of the most joyful times of the year. Keep guard with this list of scams that you should watch out for during the holidays.

Fake Apps

Apps are supposed to help us out in our daily lives. But now is the time to beware of fake apps, which are designed to do the exact opposite. These apps are often disguised as games and are offered for free. Once you download them, they steal personal information from your device. Be watchful for fake retailer apps as well. They mimic well-known brands and stores such as Dollar Tree, Foot Locker, Nordstrom, Zappos.com, Polyvore, and Christian Dior. In additional to your personal information, they will steal credit card information if you use the app to make a purchase.

Before downloading any new app to your device, read third-party reviews, and look for typos and run on sentences. All are indicators that the app could be a scam.

Online Shopping Scams

It seems like every store is offering the best deal around. During these holidays, be leery of any deals being offered by unfamiliar sites that sound too good to be true such as outrageously low prices or unrealistic discounts on popular products. Any information you give to make a purchase will be compromised. And avoid online merchants offering gift cards in exchange for a purchase, and do not click any unsolicited emails or links. Signs of a fake site include a suspicious URL, sketchy contact info, and an unclear refund policy. Visit Complex for more about red flags exposing fake shopping sites.

Social Media Scams

You know how social media works. Someone makes a post, a few shares and clicks, and all of sudden it is viral. This goes for posts for fake coupons and gift cards. DO NOT CLICK even if a friend is sharing them. Inc.com notes that links may direct you to phishing sites that try to steal your information, or sites with advertisements and malware. And NEVER share your information if asked.

Product Review Scams

We rely on product reviews to make informed decisions while shopping online. Unfortunately, fake reviews are becoming a serious problem with companies actually paying people to write positive reviews on Amazon and Yelp about their products. Don’t be fooled by review scams with the Fakespot browser extension, which allows you to analyze reviews of a product to find out if they are authentic or not.

Phishing Emails from Fake Stores and Brands

During the holiday, you can expect an inflated inbox of emails from the stores you shop at often along with order status and confirmation emails for products purchased online. It can get chaotic, which is why fake retailers choose this time to target consumers with phishing emails. While they look legit, keep a keen eye out for emails claiming there is a problem with your order or offering discounts, deals, and coupons. Clicking links could result in unintentionally downloading malware or providing personal information. Safeguard yourself. Instead of clicking links, only visit vendor websites by entering their URL in the web browser. And never download attachments.

Fake Delivery Service Emails

Waiting to receive your online purchase is stressful enough. Now you have to worry about fake-delivery service emails? Yes, unfortunately. Pretending to be major carriers like UPS, FedEx, and the US Postal Service, scammers send emails and text messages that deliver malware via attachments and direct you to phishing websites. But there are ways to avoid this holiday scam. If you have any questions, or receive a text or email, go straight to carrier’s website by entering their URL into the browser.

Charity Scams

It’s horrible to think, but there are scammers who make a profit by preying on peoples’ charitable spirit during the holidays. If you are considering a small and unfamiliar charity, check its rating and performance at Charity Navigator before making a donation. Inc.com notes you should always give payment and credit card information by contacting the charity through its website. Don’t ever give payment information to someone claiming to be a representative of the charity who contacts you by phone or email.

The effects of holiday shopping scams range from annoying advertisements to being cheated out of money to complete identity theft. By knowing which red flags to look for and shopping with caution this season, you’ll beat the scammers at their own game.

Teen Affordable Holiday Gift Guide & Giveaway!

Okay, we know what most teens really want is probably a new iPhone or one of those nifty hoverboard thingys which everybody seems to be riding these days…but you probably don’t have that kind of cheddar in your bank account to afford to buy them for your besties, right?

With that in mind, check out our Holiday Gift Guide for some cool gadgets, books, DVDs, and other cool products you can get for your friends (or request for yourself) which won’t break the bank…and if you enter our giveaway, you might just get an early Christmas box sent to your door with a whole bunch of these items in it!

Altec Lansing Mini H2O Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

altecamazon-buy-button

We have been playing with a review sample of the Altec Lansing  Mini H2O for a couple of months now, and we have to say it is one of our favorite little gadgets. In fact, there is a bit of competition as to who gets to use it around here, because it is in demand.

The Mini H2O is a tiny Bluetooth “everything-proof” speaker with big sound for such a small device. It is water-proof (it even floats!) and shock proof (yes we have dropped it and it is fine) and has a pretty long battery life of up to 6 hours.

It features a carabineer clip so you can hang it from your bag or a belt loop, and is covered in a soft rubber shell which provides shock and water protection. As far as sound quality, it is very good for a tiny device. Don’t expect too much bass from the tiny speakers, but it is definitely loud enough to use in your backyard or at casual get-togethers with your friends. We have had zero issues connecting the speaker to our phones via Bluetooth.

Other features: a microphone for speakerphone capabilities, aux-in jack,  USB charging cable included. The one thing we don’t like is this crazy loud voice which practically SHOUTS TO THE WORLD when you charge the device, pair it with a phone via Bluetooth, or turn the power on or off. If we could shut up the robo-voice, we would love this device even more.

But apart from that…highly recommended for the price (under $50)!

Shelby DVD

Shelby 3D Packshot - Final
amazon-buy-button

Okay this movie is definitely for your little brother and sister…unless you like lots of poop/flatulence jokes yourself. There are a few lines that older teens and even adults might enjoy thanks to what we can only imagine as Chevy Chase sneaking in some zingers (including a reference to the infamous Aristocrats joke in a family film…wow he got away with it).

SHELBY MA26DAY9_835DG BO

Anyway here is the official synopsis:

“In this heart-warming family tale, rescue dog Shelby manages to escape the dog pound on Christmas Eve and runs straight into the arms of little Jake (John Paul Ruttan, Robocop) and the two are immediately inseparable. The only thing standing between them and a perfect Christmas is the notorious local dogcatcher – he has Shelby in his sights and he’s not going to stop until he finds him. SHELBY stars the legendary comedian Chevy Chase (Vacation franchise, “Community”), Tom Arnold (Underdog Kids, Chilly Christmas), Addison Holley (“Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,“ “Little Charmers”) and Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow franchise, Grown Ups) as the voice of Shelby. Directed by Brian K. Roberts (En Vogue Christmas), written by Jeremy Wadzinski, developed and financed by The Fyzz Facility Limited, SHELBY is a Dove®-family-approved movie for all ages.”

Ascenders Novel

ascenders cover amazon-buy-button

ASCENDERS is about a group of teens who find themselves in a sort of in-between life world after they meet unfortunate ends, which is not very different from the normal world they just departed from — besides the fact that they can do whatever they want since they cannot die again!

Here is the official synopsis:

Is this Hell or is this High School?

Walker Callaghan doesn’t know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago…and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences.

Walker Callaghan, 17, is dead.

She doesn’t go to heaven or hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were the morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.

These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much.  In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. “There are even cheerleaders in death,” Walker observes.  It’s not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who “used to have this band.” The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie.

Principal King explains the rules — there are none. Why? You can’t die twice.

There is no homework.

No tests.

No SATS.

You’re just there to learn because the human brain isn’t fully formed until you’re 24.

By the way, you can’t get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do …because no one knows how long you’ll stay in this realm or what’s next.

“Losing someone you love would be like dying twice,” Walker says

Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You’re Told To Do Is Wrong

inteldisobey

Children are back in school. Of course, parents want them to do well, learn a lot and not get in trouble. But, do they teach them how to question orders that violate safety, legality or common decency? Author and ‘followership’ expert, Ira Chaleff, has extensively studied the topic of Intelligent Disobedience – knowing when and how to not obey a rule or order if obeying would produce a harmful result. During his research, Chaleff realized that guide dogs for the blind must recognize and resist a command that would put their human partners and themselves at risk and identify safer options for achieving the goal. If we can train dogs to distinguish between appropriate obedience and disobedience, we absolutely can and need to do so with humans. And the lessons need to start at home and in school with our children.

Life’s Essential Primer

Unwittingly making certain choices from an early age, Robert C. Trautman forged a path from meager means to accomplished gymnast, competitive figure skater, licensed helicopter pilot, professional photographer, electronics engineer, and parent.

Trautman’s new memoir-infused self-help book “Life’s Essential Primer” outlines the principles and life philosophies he has derived from his own amusing, real-life adventures. In doing so, he provides teens with the framework to efficiently prepare their educational paths to become successful adults, while avoiding the common pitfalls along the way.

Buzz Kill

For many seniors, the time leading up to college graduation and the start of a first job is often chaotic and stressful.

Having worked for more than 20 years in corporate America, author William Goodspeed understands how important it is for recent grads to become skilled at distinguishing the difference between a complimentary chuckle and a sincere cackle. His new book, “BuzzKill,” takes an alternative look at the comical situations found in workplace culture and offers insight on how to effectively use humor in leadership roles.

THE BRAIN: An Illustrated History of Neuroscience

brainponder

amazon-buy-buttonThe study of the brain has spawned many disciplines: neuroscientists have unpicked the chemical processes that power nerve signals and build memories; psychologists explore the link between our thoughts and physical activity of the brain; even philosophers have got involved as they question whether human consciousness is actually capable of being tested by science.

THE BRAIN: An Illustrated History of Neuroscience (Shelter Harbor Press, Nov 2015) is the sixth book in the successful Ponderables™ series [Over 250,000 copies sold of the first five titles.]  THE BRAIN is written in 100 chronological milestones telling the story of neuroscience from the dawn of history to the present.

Such milestones include:

  • Avicenna proposes that the brain works in three sections, where information from the senses were first merged into a “common sense” at the front of the brain. This went on to be evaluated in the central area, and then the rear brain was used to control the required responses.
  • Paul Broca studies the brain of a patient who can say little more than the sound “tan,” and in so doing reveals the speech center in the frontal lobe. He thus provides the first evidence that the brain’s functions are linked to different regions.
  • Robert Louis Stevenson writes Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which highlights a growing unease at the brain’s true power over the body and mind.
  • Eric Kandel pinpoints the chemical reactions that are involved in forming memories, and for the first time is able to link the ideas and knowledge of the mental health world to the cells and anatomy of the physical brain.

THE BRAIN is an authoritative reference book and timeline that examines the three pounds of matter inside our heads. With 100 billion nerve cells joined by thousands more to every corner of the body, the brain is wired together with 100 trillion connections. That makes each and every human brain a contender for the most complex system in the universe, endowing us with an intellect that far outstrips any other creature. However one difficult question remains: Are we intelligent enough to understand our own brains?

THE BRAIN includes a 24-page removable fold-out concertina neatly housed at the back of the book: a 12-page Timeline History of The Brain on one-side and 12 pages of Optical Illusions that demonstrate how our view of the world come entirely from the brain—which can sometimes be fooled—on the other side.

Labor Day/Back to School Giveaway for Teenagers

Some of you might be happy that beach and barbecue season is just about over and sweater weather is almost here. But we are sure that a few of you out there are feeling a bit glum about summer being nearly over.

So, to cheer everyone up, we are doing one last product roundup and giveaway feature before Labor Day — and its a big one, with everything from books to DVDs to baseball caps and Disney Descendants merch. (Note: not everything below is in the giveaway, go to the bottom of the page to see what is and how to enter!)

acnefree

We received a couple of AcneFree® 24 Hour Acne Clearing Systems to try out/giveway a couple of weeks ago, and since then we have been using it on the teens around the office here as guinea pigs. The truth is, we can see positive results already. Its not a miracle cure for acne (this doesn’t exist), but it has lessens the severity of flareups, reduces inflammation, and gives the skin a smoother appearance.

The system is a convenient, daily regimen comprised of three simple steps using AcneFree® Oil-FreePurifying Cleanser, AcneFree® Renewing Toner and AcneFree® Repair Lotion. It has something called Advanced Micro-Benzoyl Peroxide, which is stated as designed to work fast and penetrate deep into pores. Furthermore, the products continue to work even after you’re done washing your face – “continuously releasing acne-busting ingredients throughout the day to help clear your acne!”

Why we love it: It works.

daytrader

Invented by dad and inventor Samir Lyons of Marina del Rey, California, the Daytrader financial board game is Monopoly for a new generation which promises to “bring you the thrills and chills of the stock market to your own home sweet home and you can also take the game with you for your travels to play at your destination.”

The point of the game is to retire young and rich (just like real life, haha). The way you do this is earning salary, saving, investing, and managing risk. While this sounds kind of boring in writing, the game is actually VERY fun to play. The pace is fast, and surprises abound (including the possibility of getting completely wiped out).

A few critiques: the play money is too similar in color to really distinguish (see the 10,000 and 100,000 notes in the picture above for an example). Also, the instructions were a bit unclear on one minor point, which we sort of corrected ourselves (we won’t bore you with the details). Finally, you don’t really “day trade” per the real investment definition of the term, so the name of the game might not be the best choice. A bit more testing with focus groups and these likely would have been caught before wide release.

Nonetheless, it is a cool game, and highly recommended, especially if you are as sick of Monopoly as we are.

Why we love it: Fast paced, fun, and educational.

glamscreen

We don’t know what it is about teenage girls, but they always seem to be checking themselves in the mirror. That’s why they take so long in the bathroom. Well, someone came up with an ingenious way to speed up those bathroom lines at the mall while protecting your phone with the Glam Screen Mirror Screen Protector.

Created by television personality Jonathan Cheban, it is a smartphone cover that doubles as a mirror. When the screen is lit, the Glam Screen is invisible. When it’s off, the cover turns into a cool mirror you can use to check your make up, fix your hair and otherwise not hog up the bathroom mirror when your little brother needs to pee. Bonus: the tempered glass is scratch-resistant tempered glass, and it installs without bubbles in a snap and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

“About Hope Bridge: After his father’s shocking suicide, Jackson (Booboo Stewart, Twilight:Eclipse, X-Men: Days of Future Past) begins a search for the truth behind the devastating decision his father made.”

“A violent outburst at school crosses his path with a counselor, Eric (Kevin Sorbo, God’s Not Dead, Hercules) . Jackson travels down a twisting road leading to a decades-old secret that could destroy him. As Eric’s guidance falls on deaf ears, Jackson’s quest for answers is only breeding more questions. Presented in a kid-friendly format, this fun, fact-filled book is packed with all the essentials for budding photographers.”

The technological advances have made it much more accessible, and now everyone, including kids, is walking around with some kind of camera in their pocket. 7keys

Control your beliefs and take command over your life with 7 Keys to Unlock Your Full Potential by C. James Jensen.

“Why is it I have prayed and prayed and got no answer?

Jim Jensen has been asked this question untold times. It’s a very common complaint all over the world. His answer is this: “All thoughts are prayers, and all prayers are answered – positive or negative. In life, you don’t often get what you want – you get what you expect. And the key to creating the realities you desire and deserve is to make what you want and what you expect the same.”

“The reader will be taken on a journey toward a doorway that opens a life of expanded opportunities and potential successes. This book does not require a leap of faith. The principles and techniques presented herein are both practical and well documented by modern science. Learn how to rid yourself of emotional baggage, negative self talk, and to unleash the empowering wisdom of the subconscious mind to achieve a better life. This is not a system, this is not a program, this is the way the universe works and the roadmap to manifesting all you deserve and want presented in a style, clarity, authenticity and down-to-earth manner anyone can comprehend and put into practice.”

Why we love it: We have started putting these principles into place ourselves, and the results have been pretty amazing already.

Nerf Rebelle 10 Mile FRS Walkie Talkie Review

Rebelle Walkie 1P1060573We received a pair of Nerf Rebelle 10 Mile FRS Walkie Talkies for review, and we have to say we really enjoyed using them. Let’s check out some of the specs and what we liked, and didn’t like, about these units.

The walkie talkies are small, and are easily usable by even little kids. The case is made of hard plastic, and while we didn’t drop the units intentionally to see if we could break them (although we were tempted to because, you know, science), they seem to be pretty durable.

Setup is super easy. Just install the provided 3 AAA batteries and press one button on the front which enters channel selection mode. Press the up and down keys to select one of 22 channels on each unit, and voila…you are done. Press the push-to-talk button on the side, and chat away!

The units sound pretty good for a kid’s toy, and they can get LOUD at max volume. So loud that you will attract attention from anyone within 20-30 feet! Volume is very easy to adjust, however.

These walkie talkies are advertised as working up to 10 miles apart. Well, we tested this around our neighborhood, and at Six Flags Magic Mountain, and can assure you that there is no way these are going to work at one mile apart in a typical town, let alone 10. Our top distance was about 3 to 4 blocks, but this is with plenty of buildings, cars and trees in the way. Perhaps at a campsite or beach you will have a better range,

A word on interference: while at Six Flags, we picked up some transmissions of park workers (we think) using their own walkie talkies. Switching channels remedied this, but just be aware that lots of people use FRS devices, so you might pick up some unwanted chatter on some channels.

Other good things about the Nerf Rebelle walkie talkies: long battery life (we’ve not changed ours in over a week of moderate use), belt clip on the back, bright colors, and just overall coolness compared with everyone else who just texts. These things are fun!P1060564

SkyBell Wi-Fi Video Doorbell

SkyBell is a Wi-Fi enabled video doorbell that comes with an app that allows you to see who’s at your door (and talk to them) through a live video feed to your iOS and Android mobile devices, even if you are in another country!

Pretty cool idea, right?

Here are some of the features:

  • advanced motion sensor for sending alerts and video even when a visitor doesn’t press the button
  • contrast setting for more favorable lighting
  • ‘on-demand’ feature that allows you to see out of the SkyBell camera at any time
  • turn off your home’s doorbell chime from the app
  • invisible night vision for viewing after dark
  • snap a picture or record a video stream directly to your device
  • looks cool

Like anything else though, there are a few cons

  • SkyBell requires full-time power and is designed to be connected to a wired, mechanical doorbell chime. This means installation is a pain, and we wish they would simply make a battery-powered version you could stick anywhere.
  • apartment dwellers cannot use the device, because of the above.
  • image quality is not the greatest.

The product retails for about $200, and you can get it on Amazon .

Tropic Spa Home Mist Tanning System

For those of us who want a bit of color in time for Graduation without exposure to dangerous UV rays, Tropic Spa Home Mist Tanning System promises a solution.

The way the system works is pretty ingenious. You first charge the unit’s batteries (takes about half a day), and then load it up with six cans of a special spray liquid, composed of DHA plus skin moisturizers and conditioners.

Then you hang the unit from a door, such as a bedroom or bathroom, and stand in front of it. After activation, the unit starts to spray all six cans simultaneously, and beeps indicate the speed at which you should be turning to ensure full and even coverage.

After being sprayed, you use the included plastic gloves to spread it around to spots that might have been missed, such as the tops of your feet, behind the ears, the neck, etc. and that’s it! After a few hours, the chemicals set and you are tan!

The system retails for $334.95, but if you would like to try the system they are offering a special for $249 through the end of June 2015.
