Moving Away From Home and Into a Studio: 5 Key Tips for First Time Renters

If you’re a recent high school graduate and plan on moving out of your parents house and into your own studio, here are some key tips as a first time renter.

When you think about getting your first apartment, does it fill you with glee? Are you sick and tired of living with your parents and ready to strike out on your own?

More than one-third of Millennials would choose a long-term rental over buying a house. It’s a great way to save money on home repairs and property taxes.

Renting is also a good idea if you’re planning to relocate in a few years, or if you are saving to buy a home.

If you’re a first-time renter, this article’s for you. We’ll give you an insider’s look at renting an apartment along with some pro tips for getting a good deal.

Start Saving ASAP

Any list of key tips for first-time renters has to start with money. You’re going to need a lot more than you think to make your big move.

In general, you’re going to need:

  • the first month’s rent
  • a one-time deposit equal to the first month’s rent
  • a deposit for utilities like gas, electric, and water
  • an emergency fund equal to three months’ worth of living expenses

If you would like to have a pet in your apartment, you may have to pay a pet deposit or a monthly fee.

It seems like a lot of money, and it really is. Depending upon the cost of rent in your area, you may have to save more than $5,000 to be move-in ready.

That’s why it’s vital to start saving for your move as soon as possible. If you can put away $100 per week, you’ll have $5,000 in less than 12 months.

Make a List of Must-Haves

Everyone has a list of requirements when it comes to renting an apartment. You might want to have on-site laundry or a pool, or you might want to be near public transportation.

As you start to search for apartments online, take the time to look at their lists of amenities. You might really like an apartment online, only to realize that they don’t have air conditioning, wi-fi, parking, or storage.

Some apartment buildings make you pay your own utilities, while others have you covered on gas and electricity. Having utilities included means that you don’t have to worry about the cost of heat, a nice bonus if you really like the apartment.

Before you move in, though, make sure that you know which utilities you’d have to pay. Some places want you to pay quarterly for water, sewer, or trash services.

First-time renters can save money by renting a studio apartment. Studios tend to have one large room with a separate kitchen and bathroom, the perfect size for one person.

They often include the cost of gas and electricity, allowing you to cut down on living expenses.

Figure out the Roommate Situation

You never really know someone until you live with them, so taking on a roommate or two can be a risky maneuver. Sharing expenses, however, could drastically improve your financial outlook.

Before you move in with a friend or random stranger, take the time to talk about your expectations for cleaning, buying food, and splitting bills.

If you can come to an agreement about those three things, you have a good chance of staying friends for a long time.

Living with people can be difficult. Noisy roommates can interfere with you studying or sleeping, jeopardizing your job – or your future career.

If you’re a morning person trying to live with a late-night podcaster or musician, you might look into renting a studio. Not a studio apartment, but an offsite studio space for rent that would allow them to practice and record away from home.

Overall, the most important thing to remember about living with roomies is that everyone must have their own space with a door that locks. You may be tempted to get a smaller apartment and convert the living room into a bedroom.

The problem with that scenario is that one person’s stuff is more susceptible to theft from outside visitors. Privacy is key to a good apartment-sharing situation.

Decorate, Decorate, Decorate!

Once you decide whether you want to live with roommates and sort out the amenities, it’s time to put down your deposit and move in.

While you may be tempted to buy furniture online, you may be able to get a better deal with a local furniture store. They can often spread out your payments over the course of six months to a year, which is a spectacular way to build your credit.

Once you’ve invested in a couch, a bed, and some basic kitchen gear, it’s time to hit the thrift shops. You will be amazed at what you can find there, including gently-used:

  • bedsheets
  • towels
  • bookcases
  • plates
  • books
  • clothing

Thrift stores may also have cool posters, throw pillows, and tapestries. It’s one of the best ways to save money if you’re a first-time renter, and it also helps the environment.

Thrift stores are great places to find high-quality vintage furniture that’s both beautiful and functional. Take your time and buy furniture that you’re going to have for years to come.

Pro Tips for First-Time Renters

Before you sign your lease, there are a few more things you should know about renting an apartment.

First, you may be able to get a rent discount if you move during the off-season. In addition to locking in a lower rate, you may be able to get the first month for free.

Second, you may not have to pay the pet deposit. Talk to your landlord about waiving the fee for a well-behaved cat or dog. If you can’t get the deposit waived, you may still be able to get the monthly fee reduced.

Finally, always trust your instincts. If you don’t feel safe in the apartment’s parking lot or in its hallways, look for another place to move. Your personal safety and comfort are most important.

We Need to Do Something About Transgender Teen Depression

As the world becomes a more open and understanding place, more people are becoming comfortable coming forward about being transgender.

One of the main issues surrounding this is the fact that more transgender people are also becoming – or at least reporting – depression.

With 1.8% of youth identifying as transgender – a significantly higher statistic than previously believed – it’s becoming increasingly important to identify the issue of transgender teen depression.

In fact, compared to cisgender people of a similar age, transgender youth report issues like depression and suicidal thinking much more frequently. One out of every three transgender youth in 2019 reported attempting suicide. A third also said that they had been sexually attacked.

More than half of transgender teens reported being depressed for at least 2 weeks in the last year.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that this situation needs to be addressed properly. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the possibilities.

A Bit About Transgender Teen Depression

Transgender teen depression is an important issue. Unfortunately, since it’s only been recently discussed in the media and mainstream psychology, it is not yet well-understood.

One of the reasons that transgender teen depression is so common is because these youth don’t have much of a community to find support in. They are going through very difficult emotions, and yet they don’t have a lot of people to confide in.

Someone struggling with anxiety, for example, immediately has a large support group – should they go seek for it. Massive numbers of psychologists are trained to help people manage anxiety, and virtually everyone has experienced some degree of anxiety at some point during their life. An anxious person can find support by simply talking about their issue.

A transgender teen, on the other hand, does not have many support groups. It can be very difficult for a transgender teen to find someone else who is going through the same issues. To make the problem even worse, some transgender teens are afraid to come out about their issues because they fear violence, judgment, or rejection from their peers.

The issue of being transgender deals with emotional problems that are not typically tackled in psychology. The idea of being born the wrong gender – to live in a body that’s different than what you believe you should have – has only recently adopted mainstream acceptance, and as such, there hasn’t been too much research done regarding the issue.

One of the issues that these youth face is the compounding nature of the problem. They are constantly reminded every day of their feelings:

  • They may often be called a name that they don’t feel suits their gender
  • They may be called to fulfill gender roles that they don’t feel that they fit
  • They are frequently the subject of assumptions that people make based on their perceived gender

Improving the Situation

One of the best ways to improve the situation is by promoting awareness and acceptance.

Acceptance of the individual as a human being, despite any differences, is of crucial importance here – not just for peers, but for parents, family members, teachers and employers of transgender youth.

Recognizing the issues they face allows these youth to feel more comfortable with themselves, and also discourages stigma and violence against transgender teens. This is the most important thing that we can do to help lessen the difficulties that these teens encounter.

In Conclusion

Transgender teen depression is a serious problem, but one that’s becoming acknowledged by the mainstream. If you or a loved one struggles with transgender issues, the best thing to do is compassionately spread awareness and acceptance about the issue. If you feel the need, don’t hesitate to seek out a therapist or counselor.

The 5 Skincare Tips You Probably Didn’t Know About

From taking notes on your favorite YouTube star’s skincare regimen video to religiously reading every review of a newly launched product, it’s safe to say that many of us are crazy about skincare. Taking care of your skin is in, and in case you need further proof, CNN reports that skincare sales reached a whopping $5.6 billion last year.

Indeed, having clear, glowing skin is one of the biggest confidence boosters out there, aside from being a good sign of proper hygiene. But did you know that there’s more to it than stocking up on an array of skincare products? Read on to find out five surprising tips and tricks for taking good care of your skin.

1. Water, Water, Water

Water is one of the earth’s most essential elements, as it helps our bodies function properly. After all, 60% of our body is made up of it. That’s one huge reason why staying hydrated is a key factor in keeping your skin clear and healthy.

As pointed out in our post on the ‘5 Common Sense Tips to Make Your Skin Glow’, water serves to both cleanse your body from toxins and eliminate those pesky blemishes on your skin. So, be sure to drink the recommended 2 liters of water everyday to reap its purifying benefits.

2. Avoid Key Food Items

You might be familiar with the saying: “You are what you eat.” This holds true today, especially as the food you eat plays a huge role in determining how clear your skin is. Simply put, poor eating habits can cause poor skin. And this is why it’s best to avoid sugary and oily food, as well as dairy products, since they can cause your skin to flare up.

It’s essential to recognize the role that your diet has on your skin. In a post on ‘Here’s How to Get Rid of Your Hormonal Acne’ published by Parsley Health, CEO Robin Berzin shared her own experience during her high school and med school days, when she realized the connection between her skin problems and her food sensitivities. This is why you should skip processed food like potato chips, bread, and anything fried, as they promote the skin’s production of sebum — the more of this substance you have, the more likely acne will appear.

3. Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Another possible culprit behind your breakouts could be your beloved makeup brushes. When you apply makeup using a brush, its remnants can turn into dirt, dust, and dead skin cells that could all damage your skin.

If you suspect that this is what’s behind your own skin problems, there’s no need to throw your brushes away, as all you need to do is clean them. To prevent the build-up of bacteria, wash your make up brushes at least every two weeks with gentle, anti-bacterial soap. But be sure to do it quickly, so that the bristles don’t break.

4. Use Coconut Oil as a Makeup Remover

You should also pay close attention to how you remove your makeup, as some store-bought removers contain harmful chemicals that can aggravate your skin conditions. Instead of going through the trouble of reading all the product ingredients, you have the option of going the natural route, and trade your old makeup remover for a jar or bottle of coconut oil.

Dermatologists Anthony Youn and Carl Thornfeldt recommend coconut oil as a makeup remover, thanks to its anti-bacterial and anti-yeast properties. However, it’s important to note that you shouldn’t use a washcloth or cotton pads when applying coconut oil, as you’ll need to liquify the product in your hands.

5. Invest in a Silk Pillowcase

Before you head to bed at the end of a long day, why not change your regular pillowcase into silk ones? The standard cotton pillowcase can be rather harsh on your skin, and you’ve most likely woken up with marks from the casing. Consider switching to pillow cases that come in a silk material to help protect your skin and avoid the damaging long-term effects of typical cotton cloth.

Not only are they pretty, but silk pillowcases are extremely friendly to your skin, too. They free you from those all-too-common morning creases, while also preventing the appearance of wrinkles, puffiness, and redness on your face.

3 Tips for Passing Your Driver’s License Test the First Time

The day you obtain your driver’s license marks a major milestone in your journey towards independence. Once you have it, you can legally hit the road with pride and confidence, knowing that you now have the freedom to travel when and where you want to – though that will probably depend on your parents’ jurisdiction, at least for a few more years.

Before that happens, two obstacles lie ahead of you, namely the written exam and the infamous driver’s test. Many aspiring motorists have taken on the challenge and failed. Many were unsuccessful more than once. But with the right knowledge and a bit of careful preparation, you can effortlessly pass both tests on your first attempt.

Think about it this way: how many licensed drivers do you think are on the road today? According to Statista, there are currently around 225 million licensed drivers in the United States. It’s safe to say that not all of them are professional driving instructors. If that was the case, we probably wouldn’t have so many accidents.

So, to alleviate the stress and ensure that you’re in the right mindset come test day, here are three tips that will help you pass your driver’s license test the first time.

Practice

Driving a car is one thing that you can only get better at with practice. There are things that you’ll learn in the driver’s seat that you simply can’t get from reading. The more time you spend driving, the better your feel for how the car responds to your input will become. You’ll also develop a greater understanding of the car’s shape and size.

This is key to your success, as knowing the exterior of your vehicle and its relation to your position is important for the test. Try to log as much time as you can behind the wheel and consider enlisting the help of an expert to oversee how you drive and identify where you can improve.

It would be wise to avoid solely taking advice from an older friend or family member, as they may have developed some improper or outdated driving habits that don’t align with the expectations of the test. Opting for a professional will also help you obtain the right answers to any questions you may have about the test and driving in general.

Prepare

Of course, being prepared will go a long way in making you feel more comfortable during each stage of the test. It will also help you adapt to unexpected situations, such as different weather conditions or changes in traffic. You don’t want to be frantically searching for the windshield wiper stalk if it rains or slam the brakes on when an ambulance tries to pass.

As for the written exam, it’s simply a matter of studying, studying, and studying some more. That’s not to say you should subject yourself to information overload but do run through every aspect of the test that you struggle with until you’re confident that you know it well.

Consider reading a step-by-step plan that will help you prepare in the best way possible. In addition to studying, you can also take mock tests to get a feel for what the real thing will entail. These days, you can even download an app that will allow you to easily practice for the test on the go whenever you have a few minutes to spare.

Know Your Car

Ensure that you’ve chosen the right car for the test. It should be a model that’s mechanically sound, easy to maneuver, and preferably smaller in size. Perhaps your starter car will do. If not, consider borrowing a car from your driving instructor. Once you have the right car, you should take the time to learn it inside-out.

You should confidently know the location and functionality of each component. Take the time to get a good feel for the brake and gas pedals, as this will help you avoid slowing down or accelerating too aggressively. Again, it’s important that you understand the dimensions of the car, such as the distance between the front bumper and where you’re seated.

Conclusion

By applying the above tips and taking the time to adequately prepare for your test, you can head to the DMV with peace of mind knowing that you’ll pass on your first attempt. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek help if there’s something you don’t understand.

How to Deal with the Death of a Grandparent

For many teens, the death of a grandparent is their first experience with loss. Grief affects people in different ways. Some teens may feel angry, others devastated, and yet others may be numb or in disbelief.

There is no right or wrong way to grieve the loss of a loved one. The most important thing is learning how to heal and move on.

Understand the Five Stages of Grief

Many teens who lose a grandparent will go through the five stages of grief, but you may also experience other emotions.

The five stages of grief include:

  • Denial and isolation
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

You may not experience these stages in this order, or you may not go through certain stages. You may go through these stages at different points in your life. Many people never reach the acceptance stage simply because we are not afforded the time to properly grieve a loss.

It’s common for bereaved grandchildren to feel:

  • Emotionally numb, or to have difficulty crying. This does not mean that you are not affected by the loss. It just means that it is taking some time for you to accept that it is real.
  • Alone or forgotten. You may feel like your friends and family don’t realize how much you are hurting. You may feel that your parents and your surviving grandparent are receiving more support than you, and that others don’t realize that you also need help.
  • Guilty for not spending more time with the grandparent. You may have so many questions or things you’d like to say to your grandparent.
  • Anxious about death, particularly if this is your first time experiencing a loss. You may feel anxious for the safety of your loved ones.

Take a Time Out and Talk About It

Many people will tell you to keep busy after the death of a loved one, but it’s important to instead take time out to process and work through your emotions.

If you try to rush right back to school, you may find it hard to be in the present moment and to pay attention to the work. Give yourself at least a day or two to work through the initial shock and grief.

Stay close to your family, and talk about your emotions. Sometimes, talking through it can help you process what you’re feeling.

Understand the Estate Settlement and Probate Process

The death of a loved one is difficult enough as is. The last thing you want to think at such a time is the legal steps that need to take place.

As a teen, you won’t have to worry too much about the logistics of making funeral arrangements or having to deal with the probate process or hiring a probate attorney. Depending on your family’s preferences, you may be asked to be present during the reading of your grandparent’s last will and testament. During the reading, you will find out what you inherited from your grandparent, if anything.

Support Your Family

Be there for your loved ones. Understand that you are all grieving the loss of your grandparent. Check in on your loved ones. Ask how they are doing, and provide as much support as you can to those around you.

Biggest Female Pop Stars

Let’s get this list started with four favorite females that are dominating the charts (and tabloids) right now.

Ariana Grande

The tiny and tattooed Ariana Grande is making headlines for a variety of reasons.

First, she released her fifth LP — Thank U, Next — this February, and it was very well-received.

Three of the singles hit the Top 100 on Billboard’s music charts: “7 Rings,” “Thank U, Next,” and “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.” Whether you liked the songs or not, you can’t deny their great beats and memorable lyrics.

Second, she made the news recently after suing Forever 21 (for a cool $10 million) after using her likeness, without permission, in recent advertisements. Could that have contributed to Forever 21’s recent closure of stores across the U.S.?

And, unsurprisingly, she became the most-followed female on Instagram with 146.3 million followers. Sorry, Selena Gomez!

Grande also recently collaborated with Miley Cyrus. Let’s move on to her next.

Miley Cyrus

Despite what you have to say about Miley’s lifestyle, her voice is one that goes unmatched.

Her new ballad, “Slide Away,” is an ode to her newly-ended marriage with Liam Hemsworth (much to fans’ dismay). And in preparation for her soon-to-be-released She Is Miley Cyrus, she put out a six-song, 19-minute EP entitled She Is Coming. One song from the album, “Mother’s Daughter,” came with a body-positive music video that fans adored.

On top of all this music, she starred in Black Mirror‘s most recent season, playing the complex character of Ashley O.

And sticking with the movie theme, she, along with Lana Del Ray and Ariana Grande, made a soundtrack and accompanying video for the new Charlie’s Angels reboot.

Taylor Swift

Lover was the star’s seventh LP and the album we’ve all been patiently waiting for since 2017.

It contains eighteen different ballads, most on the subject of — you guessed it — love. After all, that’s worked so well for her in the past. Why change the tune now?

That goes for self-love, too. “The Man” is all about staying strong as a female in the world of men.

Visit here often for the accompanying tour we all know is bound to be announced any day now!

Billie Eilish

Seventeen-year-old Eilish became popular with the crooning “Ocean Eyes” — a song that she only intended to be a part of her dance routine in 2015.

But her siblings thought it too good to remain in dance class.

They posted it to SoundCloud in 2016 and soon, major record labels were fighting to pick it up. In only a short amount of time, the song got played by an astounding 10 million people.

Soon after, she released a music video for the song that was just as popular. This is only the beginning of her story.

Her new album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, featured a variety of hits — one of which, “Bad Guy,” came in the #1 spot on the Billboard Top 100.

Shawn Mendes

Canadian heartthrob Shawn Mendes has had 13 songs reach the Billboard Top 100 chart.

Five of them have even hit the top 10: “Señorita” with Camila Cabello, “If I Can’t Have You,” “Stitches,” “Treat You Better,” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.”

“Señorita” even spent some time in the #1 spot! (It likely had a little bit to do with the popularity of Camila Cabello as well.)

Khalid

Khalid has a soulful, diverse voice that rides the line between pop and R&B

His first and only album to date, American Teen, is just that — a collection of pop songs that describe life as a living, loving, growing and learning teenager.

He also does a number of notable collaborations with artists from Billie Eilish and H.E.R. to Halsey and Ed Sheeran.

This is another reason we’re hearing him everywhere. Play a Shawn Mendes playlist on Spotify and “Location” by Khalid is bound to pop up. He was featured on more than twenty songs with various artists in the last year alone.

It’s safe to say Khalid and his duets aren’t going anywhere!

Post Malone

Post Malone is not only the subject of many a hilarious meme, but he’s a rising star in pop, hip hop, and R&B.

He’s had a whopping 44 songs on the Billboard Top 100. Three of those became #1 hits while nine reached the Top 10.

One song, “Sunflower,” got featured in the newest Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse movie, further catapulting Malone to the top of everyone’s playlists.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little (Pop) Star

These are some — of many — of the biggest pop stars right now.

This list is certainly not exhaustive. The pop music scene is full of awesome talent. You’ll just have to turn on your local radio station to hear more.

Can herbs really make your breasts bigger?

A lot of girls are very self-conscious about their bodies. While there is plenty of advice out there to “just accept yourself,” it is not that easy. We are hit every day with standards of beauty in the media and social platforms. This makes us compare ourselves, and its kind of impossible not to.

One area which girls are sensitive about is breast size. Generally, we want them bigger! Its just kind of a normal part of being a girl to want to look like the fashion models and actresses we see, but understand that breast size doesn’t determine your worth or even whether guys like you. Guys like all types, trust us!

The truth is: your genes and the amount of estrogen in your body determine your breast size, and they will also naturally grow as you get older. They will also grow when you get pregnant. However, say you are hell-bent on getting bigger breasts. You have probably heard about breast enhancement pills, creams, implants, plastic surgery, and many more methods. But what about herbs like dong quai, wild yam, watercress leaf, saw palmetto, and so on ?

Not all herbs are beneficial for your health. They may have side effects and interact with other medications. In other words, ask a doctor before you go taking a bunch of herbs which might not work or even cause you harm.

That being said, here are some herbs which supposedly increase estrogen and therefore help increase bust size. Take this information with a grain of salt, and consult with doctors FIRST before taking your research further!

Fennel seed

Fennel seeds have some essential compounds named dianethole and photoanethole. These compounds purportedly help to increase the level of estrogen inside your body and increasing the flow of breast milk.

Hops

Hops (the stuff they use to make beer) contains a phytoestrogen named 8-prenylnaringenin which has 0.2-20% of estradiol. This THE primary estrogen hormone that enlarges your breasts — however whether it works the same by eating hops is anyone’s guess at this point.

Dong Quai

Dong Quai supposedly helps balance the level of your body’s estrogen and thus affect breast enlargement. Moreover, this herb contains isoflavone, a chemical that some say keeps breasts firmer and fuller.

Watercress Leaf

Watercress is also touted by some to promote milk production in your breasts, which enlarges breasts. Of course, if you are breastfeeding, your breasts are already bigger so….

Wild Yam

A vital natural hormone called diosgenin is found in wild yam. This hormone allegedly helps balance female hormones, enlarge breasts, and even promote healthy levels of cholesterol.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is another breast enlargement natural herb that you can find mostly in North America. It has another name, Serenoa Repens. It has benefits for both men and women. It contains phytochemicals which might stimulate the estrogen hormone that is involved in enhancing your breasts’ size.

Pueraria Mirifica

Pueraria Mirifica is used by people in Thailand and Burma to nourish their skin and promote blood flow. It is also known as White Kwao Krua. It contains miroestrol and deoxymirostrol which could possibly mimic the work of estrogen to enlarge your breast’s size.

Blessed thistle

Naturalist physicians prescribe this herb to treat appetite and indigestion, and it has also been used for nursing women to increase the flow of milk (aka bigger boobs).

Final Verdict

The truth is: NOBODY REALLY KNOWS IF HERBS CAN MAKE YOUR BOOBS BIGGER! There has to be more data collected and experiments done–but if you were a plastic surgeon, would you really pay for these studies to be done and possibly cut your paycheck? So prepare to wait a long time for the answers…
