Hayley Gripp – Anti-Bully Activist, Model and Actress

hayley grippOctober is National Bullying Prevention Month, and in addition to traveling to Las Vegas to cover Carly Rae Jepsen at #UniteLIVE Concert to Rock Out Bullying, we also decided to feature an inspiring up-and-coming actress and model who is also a major activist against bullying and a role model for kids.

Hayley Gripp not only overcame intense bullying in school due to her Tourette’s Syndrome, but has taken those experiences and turned them into something positive by teaching others how to deal with the same problems in a positive way.

Here’s a few words from Hayley!:

1. Explain the advocacy-anti-bullying work that you do.

I work very closely with two organizations. The Tourette Syndrome Association, and The No Bull Challenge. I go around to schools that are having problems with bullies and tell them my story of overcoming being bullied as well as educate them on how to prevent it. I often write articles on bullying for magazines and blogs and I also mentor kids with self esteem issues.

2. What has been the most rewarding thing about what you have done as advocate so far?

After giving a speech at a school and having kids come up and saying either “I had no idea I was being a bully” or “Wow hearing your story gives me hope things will get better for me”. Nothing beats knowing you impacted their lives.

3. Tell us about your personal struggle with Tourette’s Syndrome?

I was diagnosed at age ten and had horrid tics. I would do everything from barking, coughing, flicking, yelling. It was really bad, and while having all these tics, it made it hard to focus in school as well.

4. How did you overcome it?

I was bullied so badly for my tics I taught myself reverse psychology to better manage the tics. It is basically replacing a bad tic with a more socially acceptable and less demanding tic. For instance, If I were to have a tic and hop on my leg, every time I had the urge to hop I would tap my foot instead. After years of training myself with this method, I was tic free at age 16.

5. Were you bullied because of it?

I can honestly say although the tics were horrible, the bullying was much worse. In Junior high kids avoided me like the plague and my teacher even bullied me for having Tourette’s. Kids can come up with the most awful things to say.

6. What mistakes did you make in regards to dealing with bullies that you think others can learn from?

I think a lot of the time I used to fight back but I have learned if you say something mean back to a bully, kids can twist it and you can become the mean girl. The best solution to dealing with a bully is to either walk away and tell a teacher, or to kill them with kindness. A bully will be speechless and not have a comeback to something nice.

7. Tell us about your upcoming film project.

My upcoming docu-film is called “It Only Gets Better”. It is to promote anti-bullying in a 100% positive way. When someone is being bullied badly, many times they will say “It can’t get worse than this” so the title is a positive way of saying that. It is multiple stories intertwined into one story. It is a movie with enough reality to feel like a documentary. Hopefully we will start production in January 2014

8. Tell us about your showbiz experience and aspirations.

I started a successful print modeling career about 18 months ago and in February of this year decided to go back to my passion, acting. I have done three commercials, two tv shows, two feature films and in November I will be a presenter at the IMEA awards show in Ashland KY

9. Anything else we should know?

MY official quote is: “I would rather be known in Hollywood as the overly nice actress, than Hollywood’s next mean girl”

Singer/Songwriter Sonali: Big Heart to Go Along With Her Art

sonali argadeOne of the most rewarding parts of what we do here at Teens Wanna Know is highlighting up-and-coming artists, especially those who are doing something positive for the world around them apart from their involvement in acting, music, literature, dance, or any other creative endeavor.

One such artist is Sonali Argade or, simply, Sonali. The South Florida-bred, now NYC-based singer recently gained some attention by winning a Rihanna “Diamonds” video cover contest with fellow students of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University, which culminated in meeting the pop superstar in person.

Apart from her accomplishments as a singer, Sonali also contributes to a cause which helps children with a crippling disfigurement called cleft palate. We got the chance to ask her about this recently, as well as some general “get to know you”-type questions. Here is what she had to say.

1. Tell us about your involvement with Smile Train.

You are probably already aware, Smile Train is the world’s leading cleft palate repair charity. When I learned that all it takes is $250 to change the life of a person, I was motivated to raise money for the cause. I produced my first EP Speechless and donated all the proceeds from the sale of that EP to Smile Train. I am also involved in raising student awareness of Smile Train and the issues surrounding cleft palate. In fact, on October 4th, which happens to be World Smile Day, Smile Train will be launching a new school program, Students for Smile Train.  I have the pleasure of participating and performing at this event.

2. Why cleft surgery? Is there a personal connection?

I was on a family vacation in Cambodia a few years ago; I witnessed the horrible manner in which a little girl was treated by her peers, just because she had a cleft palate. I was young at the time and didn’t fully understand it, but it was heartbreaking. A few years after this, I came across the documentary “Smile Pinki” that explains what the Smile Train is all about. When I saw this, I knew I wanted to do something to help.

3. Your name is beautiful and unique. Do you know the meaning behind it?

Thank you so much!  Sonali is a Southeast Asian name derived from Sanskrit language. It means “golden.”

4. What is your ethnicity?

My family is from India, but I was born and raised in the U.S.

5. What drives you to write music?

I am inspired by everything I see around me. Sometimes I write down my own personal stories, and other times I enjoy writing from the perspective of my friends and family. It’s fun to step into someone else’s shoes for a minute. The beauty of songwriting and music is the ability to connect with so many people, without even ever having met. I like to write about universal things that many of us can relate to.

6. How have you grown since attending NYU?

So much. For one, the experience of living on your own and being completely independent forces you to grow up very quickly. Now that I live in the city, my confidence has grown tremendously, as has my appreciation of home-cooked meals 🙂 But musically, NYU has really shaped me. I am surrounded by so many talented peers, each having their own unique skills and sound. All of that has definitely inspired me to shape my own sound, and collaborating with my classmates is a huge learning experience for me. In addition to that, the faculty at NYU is incredible. I have the privilege of studying under Grammy award-winning professors every day, and I couldn’t be luckier.

7. What are your career goals?

As I said earlier, I want to touch as many people as I can with my music and songwriting. The bigger platform you have, the more of a chance you have to stand up and impact the world, even if it’s just a little bit. I want to do what I can to help others, and music is my tool.

8. If you could recommend ONE thing teens could do to improve the world around them, what would it be?

Respect yourself. Many worldly issues stem from problems within our own selves. For example, bullying is a cause that means a great deal to me. Most bullies are driven to their hurtful actions because they find something inadequate within themselves, and choose to lash out against others to cope. If you don’t first fix yourself, you can’t hope to help others.

9. What are you working on next?

I’m always writing and recording new music! I have a couple singles lined up for the next coming months, and I’m really excited to share them!

10. Any last words?

GUARDaHEART World Heart Day Celebration Gala

The GUARDaHEART Foundation, VIPs from the California State Assembly, renowned medical professionals, and actor Eric Roberts came together to celebrate World Heart Day at a sophisticated “James Bond”-themed gathering held in the Lyon Air Museum in Santa Clara California.

The event, which was sponsored by Aviir, promoted The World Heart Day’s mission of stressing the importance of heart disease prevention, from childhood through adulthood. As heart disease is the #1 killer of both men and women in many countries, including the U.S., and 80 percent of premature deaths from heart disease can be prevented through early detection and lifestyle modification, the message of “LEARN. DETECT. PREVENT.” is one that is timely and relevant for people of all ages — especially considering the obesity epidemic in America.

Attendees enjoyed live entertainment, “shaken, not stirred cocktails,” passed hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction. Proceeds from the event are going to providing education, detection, and prevention resources for the community at large, including members of the military, first responders, and low-income families.

Teens Wanna Know spoke to a few of the attendees, who gave great information for teens on how to maintain healthy hearts, warnings about the heart-damaging effects of popular energy drinks, and provided other words of wisdom.
