We hit the streets once again to cover the red carpet for an amazing event, the 29th Annual Southland Theater Artists Goodwill Event (S.T.A.G.E.) at the famous Saban Theater in Beverly Hills. The evening was a benefit for Aids Project Los Angeles (APLA), a charity which helps those with HIV/AIDS.
Celebrities who shared their views on the current state of HIV/AIDS research and personal stories include George Gray (The Price is Right), Carolyn Hennesy (True Blood), Jo Anne Worley (Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In), Bruce Vilanch (6-time Emmy Award Winning Writer), Mary Jo Catlett (Mrs. Puff on Spongebob Squarepants), Bret Lockett (NY Jets), Mackenzie Bourg (The Voice), Jack McGee (The Fighter), John McDaniel (The Rosie O'Donnell Show), Alex Newell (Glee), Michael Becker (Celebrity Photographer), and Charlotte Rae (The Facts of Life). We also spoke with HIV positive Christian Dunlap who gave advice to other HIV positive people.

0:02
la
0:08
teens 1-0 cover the red carpet at the
0:10
29th annual stage gala to benefit aids
0:12
project los angeles
0:14
stage is the longest running annual
0:15
musical hiv aids fundraiser in the world
0:19
and lots of major starts turned out to
0:21
show their support
0:22
we had a lot of fun talking to some of
0:24
them and finding out more about this
0:25
important cause including some personal
0:27
stories hi everybody i'm george gray the
0:29
announcer of the price is right
0:31
nice you have such a cool voice i gotta
0:33
say why thank you michael that's
0:35
fabulous i'll get you a new car now what
0:38
do you feel about the progress that's
0:39
made so far with hiv and aids research
0:41
we've come so far you know to to not
0:43
demonize it to understand that we need
0:45
to pull together this affects everybody
0:47
in so many people's lives so that's huge
0:50
that's great 29th annual that's great
0:51
but we still have a lot a long way to go
0:54
now tell us about age project los
0:55
angeles we're the largest provider of
0:57
hiv and aids services in los angeles
0:59
county we've got locations across the
1:01
county we serve about 11 000 people a
1:03
year and we basically provide direct
1:06
services hiv testing hiv prevention and
1:09
advocacy work on behalf of people with
1:11
hiv and aid and how can people get
1:12
involved
1:13
well the easiest way is to go to our
1:15
website which is apla.org there's a
1:18
volunteer button or they can call us at
1:20
213-201-1600
1:22
and ask for volunteer resources and
1:24
we've got lots of opportunities we've
1:26
got one day opportunities we've got once
1:28
a week opportunities there's there's all
1:30
sorts of things you can do now what do
1:32
you feel about all the progress that's
1:33
familiar with age research so far
1:35
i don't think it's happening fast enough
1:37
i mean i'm it's fast it's great it's
1:39
wonderful but um we need it tomorrow we
1:42
need that cure tomorrow so now since
1:44
this show was by in 14s what message do
1:46
you have for the teens out there you
1:47
know what if you can just let stuff so
1:49
it's so hard to let stuff roll off your
1:51
back but if you can do it if you can
1:54
kind of
1:55
understand that you are just fine as you
1:57
are absolutely perfect flaws and all
2:01
and let them say what they will what do
2:03
you think of the progress that's made
2:04
with age research so far i think
2:07
it we have made progress was obviously
2:09
not enough let's keep going that's why
2:11
we're having this event tonight we need
2:13
much more money and everybody out of the
2:15
goodness of their heart is here to make
2:17
that happen what are you most excited
2:19
about for tonight's event tonight i'm on
2:21
the show and i have to dance and i'm
2:23
with dancers
2:24
and it's uh very exciting
2:27
just that i don't fall over something or
2:29
somebody what do you feel about the
2:30
progress that's been done so far in aids
2:32
research
2:33
well i think it's incredible leaps and
2:35
bounds we have uh you know a cocktail
2:37
now drugs people can take
2:39
that um reduces the viral load what are
2:42
you working on next
2:43
what am i working on next it's well you
2:45
know i've been lindsay lohan's sobriety
2:47
coach for 15 years and and that's a
2:51
full-time job i don't i don't have to
2:53
tell you all
2:54
i've left that i've joined a boy band
2:56
we're called other direction
2:59
if you could step in a time machine and
3:00
go back in time and tell your teen self
3:02
one piece of advice what would it be
3:09
one pizza every
3:10
every year is okay
3:13
make it special kind of like a jewish
3:14
holiday you know it's pizza day yay as
3:19
opposed to three or four a night hey
3:21
we're here with mary jo catlett some of
3:22
you may know her as mrs puff and
3:24
spongebob yes or pearl on different
3:27
strokes years ago
3:29
why spawn your bob oh spongebob why me
3:34
now what are you most excited for about
3:35
today's event
3:37
for it to be over
3:41
it's very nerve-wracking we get to do
3:43
this we put it together in less than a
3:45
week yeah and have maybe two rehearsals
3:48
at most and so crazy it's crazy
3:51
but i get to do bad jokes which i love
3:53
to do bad jokes
3:56
i'll give you one okay all right
3:58
be kind to your dentist he has fillings
4:00
too but i'm fine
4:04
don't brush me off or i'll paste your
4:06
one
4:07
bomb
4:08
bet you could crown me for that boom
4:10
stop me i might kill again so what do
4:12
you feel about the progress that's
4:13
familiar with hiv and age research so
4:15
far
4:16
i think uh you know there's there's been
4:18
a lot of progression um i i still don't
4:20
believe we're where we need to be but um
4:23
progress is good you know as long as
4:24
we're not moving backwards and we're
4:26
constantly moving forward i think it's a
4:27
beautiful thing so yeah now it's time
4:29
for our time machine question okay if
4:31
you could travel back in time and give
4:32
one piece of advice to your teen self
4:34
what would it be to my teen self oh gosh
4:37
don't take shortcuts don't take
4:39
shortcuts just do it the right way you
4:41
know hi my name is mackenzie borg and i
4:43
was on season three of the voice nice so
4:46
what was it like standing on stage in
4:47
front of all those people
4:49
it was quite an experience it was
4:51
definitely the most people i'd ever
4:52
performed for what are you working on
4:54
next
4:55
i actually just released a single
4:57
and uh i'm coming out with an ep in the
4:59
summer nice what do you think about the
5:01
progress that's been made with aid
5:02
research so far i think it's been uh
5:04
it's been terrific i uh have a brother
5:07
of mine remember the tom died of aids in
5:08
1989. and uh and then a lot of his
5:11
friends and his guy too tom poche and uh
5:14
i saw i've been uh sensitive to that
5:17
issue for a long long time and uh it
5:19
only hoped that if he'd have still been
5:21
able to hang on for another year or two
5:22
by that time they had started the the
5:24
progress with the with the cocktails and
5:27
the medication for uh for living with
5:28
the hiv would have uh possibly extended
5:32
his life a bit longer but i've been
5:33
involved with him for a long time and
5:34
i'm a great supporter of it now tell us
5:36
about the mccarthy's a show based on uh
5:40
uh an irish catholic family and uh that
5:42
lives in uh in boston and i have a gay
5:45
son
5:45
involved in a uh embedded in a
5:47
basketball high school basketball
5:49
program and i hire on my uh my son to
5:51
become
5:52
my assistant coach uh
5:54
and uh his name is jake glacey he's
5:57
played by jake lacey and
5:59
jackie weaver who was in civilized
6:01
playbook plays my wife jimmy dunn joey
6:04
mcintyre jessica chaffin uh and uh uh
6:08
it's uh it should it it's gonna prove to
6:11
be a pretty interesting show i hope so
6:13
can introduce yourself to our audience
6:14
hi my name is john mcdaniel i'm the
6:16
music director of the event tonight i
6:17
hear the stage benefit and i'm really
6:19
excited i'm leading the band and i've
6:21
worked with all the artists getting it
6:22
ready and it's a huge it's like doing a
6:24
broadway show for one night
6:26
it's crazy i don't know why we say yes
6:28
to these what we do and now you won some
6:30
awards i did i have a grammy award i
6:32
produced the original cast recording of
6:34
anna gets your gun with bernadette
6:35
peters
6:36
and i have a couple of emmys i was on
6:38
the rosie o'donnell show i was her band
6:39
leader on her talk show for six and a
6:41
half years on tv so i i racked up a
6:43
couple of emmys for that and that was
6:45
fun
6:46
so now i need an oscar and a tony to
6:48
have the full set you know i mean duh
6:51
now how's it like working with the glee
6:52
cast it's so much fun they're so nice
6:54
and welcoming and warm and it's a dream
6:57
come true because i've been watching
6:58
them forever
6:59
since the beginning and to be working
7:01
with them now is just stunning what do
7:03
you feel about the progress that's made
7:05
with aids and hiv research so far
7:07
i think we've done a great deal and i'm
7:09
also quite involved with aids research
7:11
alliance another charity that does pure
7:14
research i was on the board of directors
7:16
for two years
7:17
and i'm also one of the participants of
7:19
the la men's study which does aids
7:22
research for the federal government and
7:24
i think we've come a great long way but
7:26
we still have a long time to go
7:28
and i am particularly concerned about
7:30
the rise
7:31
of the incidence of aids in the gay
7:33
community in west hollywood and i think
7:35
we should really do more go back to
7:37
education
7:39
because all we have at the moment is
7:40
prophylactic measures we don't have a
7:42
cure yeah
7:44
so i think we should all get more
7:46
serious about safe sex can you introduce
7:49
yourself to your audience yes my name is
7:50
christian dunlap i'm from southern
7:52
arizona i've been hiv positive for about
7:55
six years
7:57
i'm living now free and clear of hiv
8:00
because of treatment what message would
8:01
you like to give to other people who are
8:03
also positive uh the message i would i
8:05
would take is uh or give rather is get
8:09
tested once every six months if you can
8:11
do it four times a year by all means do
8:13
it four times a year if you are found
8:15
positive
8:16
seek the treatment options follow your
8:18
doctor's lead and take the medications
8:21
available to you because the medications
8:23
do work being positive is not the end of
8:26
your life it is the beginning of a new
8:28
chapter of your life
8:30
thank you very much wasn't he fantastic
8:33
what do you think about the what do i
8:35
think about what what do i think about
8:37
what what do i think about so what do
8:39
you think of the product
8:41
oh you're charming they really are
8:44
oh
8:45
thanks for watching teens want to know
8:49
and i hope you're nicer than spongebob
9:18
