Why Every Teen Should Care About Their Skin

Your skin is your body’s largest organ and it does far more than simply hold you together! It protects your insides from harmful chemicals and bacteria, helps to regulate your body temperature, produces vital hormones, and provides storage for important substances such as water and fat. If you have ever watched a wound shrink and disappear, you know how amazing your skin is at healing itself. Finally, your skin is a beautiful part of who you are that deserves to be cared for!

Reduce Acne

Just about everyone will experience some degree of acne during their teens. This is because your oil glands are on overdrive during puberty. Acne is also genetic. If one or both of your parents had acne it is more likely that you will too. Luckily, there are steps you can take to reduce your acne and prevent scarring. Most importantly, gently wash your face whenever you sweat, work with greasy foods, when you wake up, and before going to bed each night. Also, make sure to use skin care products that won’t irritate your skin or clog your pores. Finally, you can treat acne with over-the-counter medications containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. For severe acne, see your dermatologist for more advanced treatment options. Just be sure to never pop or squeeze your pimples as it can cause scarring.

Keep Your Skin Young

Having young skin in your later years is very much dependent on what you do now. Exposure to the sun can damage your skin and cause wrinkles. UV rays from the sun break down your skin’s elasticity and can even cause cancer. To prevent this, wear sunscreen every time you will be outside for longer than 15 minutes, especially between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Be sure to use a broad spectrum SPF of at least 30, and don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours.

Stay Healthier

Because teens are so active they are exposed to a high amount of pollutants, germs, allergens, and other impurities. These can all affect your health. Keeping your skin clean is your first line of defense against these harmful particles. Experts recommend that teens shower every day. Use a gentle soap so that you don’t dry out your skin.

You will only have your youthful, glowing skin for so long before it is gone–and your teenage skin is absolutely beautiful! Don’t take it for granted! Do what you can to preserve it for as long as you can. Your skin does so much for you, so pay it back a little and give it the love that it deserves!
