Remembering Nathan “DJ Young Slade” Smith: A Life Cut Too Short

The world is reading the headlines right now: Nathan Smith, the 27-year-old son of Lil Jon, was found deceased in Milton, Georgia, today after going missing earlier this week.
But here’s the truth about Nathan that the scrolling news tickers won’t tell you.
He wasn’t just a “celebrity son.” He was a high-fidelity thinker, an NYU graduate, and one of the most genuinely kind souls we ever had the privilege of interviewing at Teens Wanna Know. While the world knew him as DJ Young Slade, we knew him as a young man who was deeply serious about his craft and his connection to the universe.
The Philosopher Behind the Decks
When we first interviewed Nathan, he didn’t talk about fame, money, or clout. He talked about meaning.
In a moment that stopped us in our tracks, he dropped a quote he had written himself—a “philosophy bomb” that showed he was operating on a different frequency than your average teenager:
Style is an extension of ourselves, and ourselves is an extension of the universe.
This wasn’t a throwaway line. It was how he lived. Whether he was engineering a track or curating a set, he saw himself as part of a larger whole.
More Than “Just Pushing Buttons”
What nobody tells you about the “nepo baby” conversation is that some of these kids work twice as hard to prove they belong. Nathan was one of them.
He refused to coast on his father’s name. He went to Scratch Academy to learn the technical roots of turntablism. He entered battles anonymously—and won. He eventually earned his degree from the prestigious Clive Davis Institute at NYU in 2020.
During our time with him, he was adamant about respecting the work:
It’s not as easy as it looks. You gotta know your music… It’s not just clicking a button. You gotta know your craft more than what other people do.
He walked that walk until the very end, releasing his single “Feels” in March 2025 and building a career as a respected audio engineer.
A Legacy of Kindness
We’re looking back at the raw footage from his 16th birthday party today. The guest list was a “who’s who” of future stars—Becky G, Nipsey Hussle, Sydney Park. But the moment that stands out isn’t the celebrities; it’s Nathan’s humble nature and kindness.
His father, Lil Jon, released a statement today that aligns exactly with the boy we met:
Nathan was the kindest human being you would ever meet. He was immensely caring, thoughtful, polite, passionate, and warmhearted.
Rest in Power
Nathan Smith’s time here was far too short, but his impact was high-density. He proved that you can be born into noise and still find your own signal.
To the Smith family, we send our deepest power and love. Nathan is now, truly, an extension of the universe.
Rest in Power, Slade.
