How Online Classes Can Be a Blessing and a Curse

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many classes for high-schoolers to graduate students have gone online. The process of adapting to online learning has been a rocky one. But there are many pros and cons to this new learning environment to be aware of.

More Time and Flexibility

One of the best parts of taking online classes is the added flexibility. With online classes, whether synchronous or on-demand, you’ll be able to participate in class from whatever location works best for you.

With on-demand classes in particular, you’re also able to choose whenever to watch lectures as long as you turn in assignments on time. But though this flexibility is great, be sure to keep yourself in check because it can be easy to completely forget about your work.

More Distractions

One of the downsides of online learning is the ease of getting distracted. When you simply have to watch a lecture from home, you can turn your camera and microphone off and work on other things while the lecture is going on. And while you may think you’re multitasking, you’re actually making it harder for yourself to do either task well.

You should remove distractions as much as possible so you can keep your attention on the class. Removing these distractions will help you maximize your class learning.

Harder or Easier Learning Environment

Another important aspect of online classes is the type of learning environment they create. If you’re trying to decide between an online or in-person format, think about the particular aspects of the class. If you have to take a chemistry class, it will be much more beneficial to take the class in-person so that you can do the labs yourself and learn to master the concepts hands-on.

On the other hand, other classes that require you to master all the details that a professor goes over can be helpful online because you are able to re-watch the lectures and make sure you understand all the concepts.

If you’re trying to figure out the best class format for a particular course you’re wanting to take, know that whatever format you choose has its pros and cons. Ultimately, do some self searching to figure out which option will really serve you the best. Be honest with yourself about the extent of your abilities so you don’t preemptively shoot yourself in the foot.
