Essential First Aid Skills You Need to Learn

Whether you participate in sports, hike in the mountains, or cook snacks with your friends, accidents can occasionally happen. It’s important that you know a few first aid skills so you can help your friends or yourself if someone is injured. If you can learn to be calm when an accident occurs and know the basics of how to handle an injury or physical problem, you can help everyone to stay safe.

Stop Bleeding

If you or a friend is hurt, the first thing you need to do is assess the damage. If there is broken skin, you need to focus on stopping bleeding. The best way to do this is to apply pressure to the area so that blood is obstructed and can’t get out. Initially you might do this with a clean rag or a bit of gauze, but when the bleeding slows you will want to secure it in place with a bandage. It’s a good idea to clean the surface before applying the bandage so you can prevent infection. When the bleeding has stopped, you can focus on other elements of the injury.

CPR

It can also be helpful to learn CPR, so you can help to save someone’s life if they are in trouble. It is important that you have proper CPR training before trying to perform CPR on someone. You can usually find CPR classes in your community that can help you to understand how to effectively perform CPR on someone in trouble. When you know how to perform CPR, you can help keep others safe until help arrives. Heart attacks are one of the leading causes of death in the U.S.

How to Help Someone in Shock

In many cases when someone sustains an injury, they might go into shock after the fact. If you know how to recognize and treat shock you can help them to stay safe and avoid further harm. Generally, talking to them and giving them a blanket for warmth is a good starting point. From there, you also want to make sure that you have called for help.

As a teen, you can sometimes feel helpless in emergency situations. But if you know how to administer first aid, you can be a huge help until professional aid arrives. This can give you purpose and open your life up to the possibility of more adventure since you can go out safely on your own.
